Psalm 91 – Bible Study

Theme: God’s protection, presence, and faithfulness
Common Title: The Psalm of Protection

  1. Background & Authorship
  • Author: Not named (traditionally attributed to Moses or David)
  • Context: Written as a song of trust for those who rely fully on God
  • Purpose: To reassure believers that God is a refuge in times of danger, fear, and uncertainty

  1. Verses 1–2: Declaration of trust in God
  2. Verses 3–8: God’s protection from danger and evil
  3. Verses 9–13: Security for those who dwell in God
  4. Verses 14–16: God’s personal promises to the faithful
  1. Key Verses & Meaning

Psalm 91:1

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

  • Dwells implies ongoing relationship, not temporary faith
  • God is portrayed as a safe refuge, not distant or passive

Psalm 91:3–4

“Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare… He will cover you with his feathers.”

  • Fowler’s snare = hidden dangers, traps, or attacks
  • God is shown as a protective parent, offering care and comfort

Psalm 91:5–6

“You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day…”

  • God’s protection is constant—day and night

Psalm 91:11

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

  • Angels are God’s messengers and protectors
  • This verse was quoted during Jesus’ temptation (Matthew 4:6)

Psalm 91:14–16

“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him…”

  • God speaks directly, promising:
    • Rescue
    • Protection
    • Answered prayer
    • Long life and salvation

1 What images or metaphors stand out most to you in Psalm 91 (shelter, wings, fortress, etc.)?

2 What does it mean to “dwell in the shelter of the Most High” (v.1)? Is this a place, a lifestyle, or a relationship?

What do verses 14–16 reveal about God’s heart toward those who love Him?

3 Are there areas of your life where fear has replaced trust? How might this psalm speak into that?

4 What would it look like to live daily with the confidence expressed in this psalm?

5   How does Psalm 91 describe God’s role in the life of the believer?
