When we are confronted with the brokenness of the world we live in, what can we do about it?

N.T. Wright says, “Complaint is an accusation against God that maligns His character, but lament is an appeal to God based on confidence in His character.”

Discussion Questions

  1. What is the meaning of lament?
  2. How is Jerusalem personified in verses 1-3, and what does this comparison to a widow and a slave tell us about the city’s condition?
  3. How does the text describe the depth of grief and mourning, particularly in verses like 11 and 16?
  4. How can we apply the experience of Jerusalem’s lament to our own lives when we face the consequences of our decisions?
  5. In what ways can this chapter encourage a more thoughtful approach to personal sin and the need for God’s mercy?
